4. Fun Stuff. 5 Minutes
It's important to
cover each section to get the most out of your time.
The rest or break between sections is important!
Practice performing solo pieces all the way through so
you get used to running them.
But remember to spend time finding the tricky bits and
starting them slowly!
In your band music practice counting the rests!
For fun stuff - try writing your own piece, playing your
favourite tune or playing along with your favourite
song.
Use Youtube and find other players and have a listen!
Don't worry about
having to do 7 days a week - but do try to practice for
5 days!
The Warm Up and Technical Studies
This routine follows a simple
slide
pattern and starts on either a G or a C and works down
in half steps.
1-2-3-4-5-6-7
Long notes
The aim of this first part
is to get the air working for you, memorize the slide
pattern and spend some time just blowing air through the
instrument to get the feeling of what you stomach and
chest should feel like to blow. A nice relaxed "HO"
sounding breath in is a great start to a warm round
sound.
1 - Long Notes - In this version you
start on a low C and play each slide position for 2 bars.
1a -Long Notes Advanced - In this
version you start on a G and play each position for 3
bars when you get to 7 start back at 7 on a low C.
Lips
The aim of this section is
to make sure that you are moving the air whilst changing
pitch - this is great for stamina and strength. Combined
with flutter tonguing it will really help your high
notes!
2 - Lips - The pattern starts on a
low C and runs C-G-C-G-C then follows down onto 2
position etc.
2a - Lips Advanced - The pattern starts on G-high C - G
- High C - G - High C - G - High C - G and follows a
quaver (faster) speed.
Tonguing
The aim of this is to get a nice clear
start to the note and build speed - as with many
problems playing a brass instrument the trick is Air and
Embouchure.
3 - Tongue - The pattern starts on a G and plays 5
quavers.
3a - Tongue Advanced - The pattern goes round twice
starting on a G it gets hard low down - the rhythm is 8
quavers and a long note at the end.
Slide
The aim of this part is again to make
sure your moving air whilst doing something tricky!
4 - Slide - Starting on a G keeping a strict speed go
from 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1 then 2-3-2-3-2-3-2-3-2 etc the
pattern runs twice. Use this to practice soft tonguing.
Taking these 4 areas
of technique and the Slide pattern you can extend the
exercises to play them quicker, with different rhythms
and at different volumes.
I will add a demo
video soon so you can clearly see how the technical and
warm up studies work.
