Sometimes when a composer wants to repeat a section of music but change the ending slightly he will use a 1^st and 2^nd time bar.
See opposite.

When you play the piece the first time you do the repeat as normal but on the second time you miss out the first time bar and jump to the second time bar.

The symbol opposite is a one bar repeat mark and it just means repeat the previous bar.

In some music we may see a D.C mark at the end.
This stands Da Capo which simply means go back to the beginning of the piece.

Also look out for Da Capo al fine (D.C. al fine) - repeat from beginning up to the word fine *

*The fine (Italian for finish) should be ignored the first time but used on the repeat.
Watch out for this one - Da Capo al coda (D.C. al Coda): repeat from beginning to an indicated place "to coda ".
And then play the tail part or coda which is also marked with the coda sign .

Look out for the D.S or Dal Segno sign. This means go back to the sign.
This can also be written D.S al fine or D.S al coda.
